The handful of times I’ve played Pebble Beach Golf Links, it has dusted my plate. At last, I had a chance to turn the tables.
For a moment in time last April, the fabled resort located on one of the most delectable coastlines on the planet was transformed into the epicenter of the epicurean world for the 4th annual Pebble Beach Food & Wine, a four-day eating and drinking binge that attracted 75 renowned chefs and 250 wineries. I swear it tasted like a lot more.
As one of the sold-out crowd of more than 6,000 guests, my palate luxuriated on acclaimed wines and culinary delicacies prepared on-site by the food masters, many of whom hosted informative cooking demonstrations for standing-room-only crowds in tented venues equipped with state-of-the-art kitchens built just for this event.
“If someone drops a bomb on this place, no one would eat for the next year,” said chef and Food Network star Tyler Florence as he prepared to demonstrate his signature fried chicken recipe. Although it was evident everyone’s stomach was either too full or their minds too inebriated to be all that concerned.
Of course, attending an event of this magnitude would not be complete without experiencing the 18 scrumptious holes that have served up volumes of golf history. Following the ceremonial champagne toast adjacent to the first tee to kick off the Pebble Beach Food & Wine event, many of the celebrity chefs and winemakers also took to the links.
My celebrity chef partner, Tim Love, a freewheeling personality from Texas (Lonesome Dove Western Bistro and The Love Shack) was playing his first-ever round at Pebble Beach. And after he got a finger-lickin’ tasting, he candidly admitted he would stick to his day job. However, all was not lost. With “Tin Cup” drinks being served at an open bar perched on the famous par-3 No. 7 hole, did it really matter?
Most of the same talent, mixed with new gourmet face, will bring their ingredients to create the 5th Annual Pebble Beach Food & Wine, April 12-15.
